Welcome to Marwen

☆☆☆☆1/2

+
Steve Carell gives a nomination worthy performance as Mark Hogancamp, a man who escapes into a make believe world he creates...to help him deal with life after he was brutally assaulted

The fact that this movie is based on actual events makes it that much more interesting.

Cafè Society

☆☆☆1/2

+
Directed by Woody Allen, "Cafè Society" is an engaging romantic comedy that takes viewers back to old Hollywood where Bobby (Jesse Eisenberg) moves from New York to L.A. to find work in the entertainment business with Uncle Phil (Steve Carell).

Less comedy...and more tragic romance.

The Big Short

☆☆☆☆1/2

+
Adapted from Michael Lewis' best seller "The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine," the film manages to take a story about the housing credit bust from a few years ago and make it into an entertaining story with strong performances by Christian Bale, Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, and Brad Pitt.
-
May be a little hard to understand and follow at times...but some fun "explanations breaks" help keep viewers on-track.

Foxcatcher

☆☆☆☆1/2

+
Based on actual events, "Foxcatcher" (Golden Globe nominee for best drama) stars Steve Carell (Golden Globe nominee for best actor) as multi-millionaire John du Pont whose obsession with wrestling leads him to invite Olympic Gold Medal wrestler Mark Schultz (one of Channing Tatum's best performances to date) to live and train on his property. Du Pont's enigmatic personality and behavior create a high level of tension throughout the movie.
-
It's hard to know if Carell is doing a spot-on performance of a very unusual man or just a poor performance. Likely it's the former.

Why was Tatum overlooked in the Golden Globe noms?

Rated R
2 hr. 10 min.
